How to Get Into the Creative Zone: Easy Warm-Ups for Your Painting Class

Richmond School of Painting, Adult painting classes, art workshop

At Richmond School of Painting, we know that the hardest part of any creative session is simply starting. Whether you’re joining one of our adult painting classes in Richmond, or setting up your easel at home, a few mindful moments can make all the difference in unlocking creativity and confidence.

Here are some easy, effective ways to get into your creative zone — perfect for artists of all levels.

1. Begin with Deep Breathing

Before you pick up a brush, take a few minutes to focus on your breath. Deep, steady breathing helps calm the nervous system and brings your attention to the present — ideal for transitioning from a busy day to a creative mindset.

Try this simple technique called box breating:

  • Sit or stand comfortably.

  • Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of four.

  • Hold for a count of four.

  • Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of four.

  • Repeat a few time.

As you breathe, imagine any tension melting away, leaving space for curiosity and playfulness — the foundation of creativity.

2. Play with Colour to Awaken Creativity

Colour is emotion — and one of the quickest ways to connect with your creative energy. Dip into your favourite hues and experiment with mixing on your palette or additional canvas. There’s no goal here except to explore.

3. Try Quick Sketches to Loosen Up

If you’re feeling stiff or self-conscious, grab a pencil or charcoal and do a few gesture drawings. Spend two minutes sketching simple shapes, then move on to fluid lines or abstract marks. This gets your hand moving and your mind focused on rhythm, not perfection.

Gesture drawing encourages freedom — a valuable mindset for both beginners and experienced painters.

4. Set a Gentle Creative Intention

Before your class begins, ask yourself what you’d like to explore today. Maybe it’s a colour, a texture, or even a feeling. Setting a light intention helps focus your creativity without adding pressure.

5. Connect and Share Energy

One of the most inspiring parts of our painting classes for adults in Richmond upon Thames is the shared sense of community. Take a few minutes before class to chat with other artists, exchange ideas, or simply give some feedback about their painting.

Creativity thrives in connection — and you’ll often find new inspiration just by being around others who share your passion.

  1. Start with something easy.

Look for an easy task to start with. Maybe start with the background, or just mix a colour that you like. This simple activity will lead you the way to more focused work.
